Spy - Spotify on Boxee
One of the most requested apps for Boxee is a Spotify client. At least from the European user base.
I'm glad to announce that a Beta of Spy is released in an attempt to somewhat fill this void.
Spy is not a stand-alone Spotify client. It is a remote control for a server software called Servify. Servify was developed by Johannes over at h3x.se. Servify has a number of remote clients, for example ReSpot for Android.
If you, like me, run Boxee on a HTPC, I recommend that you have Servify set up to run in a script of some sort that is executed when the machine starts up.
Boxee Box users can also run the app but they will have to connect to another computer running Servify. For example a laptop with audio out connected to the home stereo.
The app is available through Boxee in the brand new repository http://dir.rockboxee.com
I have only tested Spy on Mac OS X, so feedback from anyone running this on Windows or Linux is much appreciated.
Known issues (Mac OS X):
- Un-pause plays the song from start
- Album art is sometimes not loaded in search result

Ubuntu issue and Facebook fan page
Twitter user @pla1 has come up with a workaround for an issue on Ubuntu where a browser doesn't pop up with the Twitter URL for OAuth authentication. Please check this forum post for the solution.

Twixiee updated
Version 3.4 is out!
This is an important update since Twitter will disable Basic Authentication at the end of this month (Aug 2010).
Basic Authentication is the method of logging in where you provide a username and password.
Instead Twitter will support OAuth.
Here is a link to more information from Twitter on the so called oauthcalypse.
You as a user will notice that you will be redirected to Twitter where you will need to log in and get a PIN code that you
then enter in Twixiee.
If you are on a system with out a native webbrowser (like appleTV)
you will have to enter the Twitter URL manually in a web browser of some sort to obtain the PIN.
The issue where Twitpic and Tweetphoto images came up blank is also fixed in this version.
We have used Tweepy as the third party Twitter python library and
would like to thank them for providing this functionality which made the transistion to Oauth
much easier.
If you have any issues with logging in let us know.
Twixiee v3.3
The biggest update so far for Twixiee is out on the main boxee repository. Just launch the app from boxee to get the update.

New in release 3.3:
- Trend definitions from What The Trend?. Select a trend in the right hand list and a speech bubble pops up after a few seconds.
- Menu moved completely to the left "drawer". No more scrolling up to the top to access menu items.
- A user status box replaces the old menu at the top. It shows portrait, name, number of tweets, following and followers.
- Highlighting of links, names and hash tags in the main tweet list.
- Links, names and hash tags are available in the menu for further drill down.
- Clicking a link will launch the boxee browser
- Clicking a hash tag will search for tweets with that tag.
- Clicking a username gives the options to follow, unfollow, search or reply to the user.
- Pop-up mode. If media is playing when launching Twixiee, the user is presented with the option to switch to "pop-up mode". In this mode the media will play in full screen and new tweets will pop up in the upper left corner. There is also a new menu item for this.
- 'Fixed scolling' and dimming of non focused tweets to make the reading experience more enjoyable.
Known issues in release 3.3:
- Twitpic images are blank in the 'all pics' panel. I'm working to resolve this, but the images can also be viewed individually through the boxee browser.
Twixiee screencast

Twixiee 2.1 released.
We have added a few new features to Twixiee.
It now supports the most common twitter use cases.
Namely reading your Friends Timeline and sending tweets.
Changes are:
Login - You can now sign in with your twitter account and view your Friends Timeline.
Compose - You can now send tweets from the app!
Home - New menu item. Loads Friends Timeline if signed in. Otherwise it loads the Public Timeline.
Progress bar - For visual feedback when loading pictures.
Search field - Replaced by a new menu. Search is done thru dialog only
Trending Topics - Green background removed. Now blends in more with rest of the app.
'Invalid Signature' errors fixed
Version 1.6 of the Vimeo app is now up on the boxee App Box.
This version has fixes for the 'Invalid Signature' error that popped up when clicking on Channels and Groups. Search didn't work either.
The reason for this was that Vimeo changed their authentication method for API calls. You can read more here: http://bit.ly/3wJn1f
I first included a secondary non-HD Flash playing option for lower end systems. Unfortunately this didn't work and I had to remove it. There are reports on the boxee forums of similar issues with the Vimeo moogaloop player. I'm working with boxee to sort that out, and it can hopefully be part of a future release.
Twixiee v1.6
Over the weekend the latest version of Twixiee was released to the boxee repository. The most noticable change is probably the new background image. The most interesting new feature is perhaps the ability to view pics from the most popular twitter picture services. If the list has tweets with links to pictures, a 'pics' button will light up. Click this button to display a panel of all the pictures. Several bugfixes went in this release as well.

Vimeo app released!
I'm happy to announce that the vimeo app I've been working on for about a month is now available in the boxee App Box. Now go enjoy that HD content on your TV!!
